<br />
But it's time to link up with 100 Quilts for Kids--so I'm back on the blog!<br />
<br />
I did manage to use some layer cake scraps to make this little quilt for charity: It's the first quilt I've made start to finish in 5 days!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-x9-HlaGD-po/VgwJGAZmdsI/AAAAAAAADDk/SOxoUrJYDqw/s1600/IMG_7109.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-x9-HlaGD-po/VgwJGAZmdsI/AAAAAAAADDk/SOxoUrJYDqw/s320/IMG_7109.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zt9PfYIKHss/VgwJFx4XaaI/AAAAAAAADDg/26q2730YzCc/s1600/IMG_7113.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zt9PfYIKHss/VgwJFx4XaaI/AAAAAAAADDg/26q2730YzCc/s320/IMG_7113.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
So glad I could participate in DC Modern Quilt Guild's cause--these quilts are all going to children living in the DC General Homeless shelter--I just wish it was more than one quilt...<br />
<br />
Also on the sewing table is the JeliQuilts Triple Goosed pattern that I started over summer vacation:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EeghPDXzTgQ/VgwJGF5Y3hI/AAAAAAAADDo/HLezoFIs9Hw/s1600/IMG_7116.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EeghPDXzTgQ/VgwJGF5Y3hI/AAAAAAAADDo/HLezoFIs9Hw/s320/IMG_7116.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
That's all for now...I'm off to prep for Back to School Night :)<br />

(A very hard thing to earn indeed ;)<br />
<br />
Somewhere, and I forget exactly where, I got the notion of using flannel as a whiteboard eraser. I use little individual whiteboards in my classrooms. Recently, I've found myself having students use "big" versions of the showerboard whiteboards for group work. And, I've started using those old printable transparency sheets as cover sheets so that students can "write on" my multiple choice tests without actually writing on them!<br />
<br />
All of these things seem pretty popular with my students, but they left my little erasers (essentially felt glued to a piece of wood) really, really disgusting! So, it was time for a change.<br />
<br />
Washable flannel whiteboard erasers! No more waste...and they're cute and cuddly. My students love them.<br />
<br />
To make your own:<br />
Cut long strips of flannel 6.5 inches wide, fold right-sides together hot-dog style, and sew a 1/4" seam to create a really long tube. Press the seam open down the center of the tube and trim to 5" long.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-T1s-X7kX4-k/VC9CgIjfgYI/AAAAAAAAC8E/LIzbQ6J3yZ8/s1600/IMG_4895.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-T1s-X7kX4-k/VC9CgIjfgYI/AAAAAAAAC8E/LIzbQ6J3yZ8/s1600/IMG_4895.jpg" height="320" width="320" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Chain sewing, sew across the bottom of each. Be sure to backstitch at the beginning and end of each pocket. Cut the threads, turn right side out, and you'll have these :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IfC9HKT3_3w/VC9CdzR2o4I/AAAAAAAAC7U/0BFWL-4RMek/s1600/IMG_4887.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IfC9HKT3_3w/VC9CdzR2o4I/AAAAAAAAC7U/0BFWL-4RMek/s1600/IMG_4887.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Chop up scraps with a rotary cutter...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VdcuWuMkI8I/VC9CeKucJhI/AAAAAAAAC7Y/RqC06Hy73pI/s1600/IMG_4888.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VdcuWuMkI8I/VC9CeKucJhI/AAAAAAAAC7Y/RqC06Hy73pI/s1600/IMG_4888.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
Until they look like this..<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3JE3nFGdyKo/VC9CeIW5uaI/AAAAAAAAC7c/6-3iiOR5Bkc/s1600/IMG_4889.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3JE3nFGdyKo/VC9CeIW5uaI/AAAAAAAAC7c/6-3iiOR5Bkc/s1600/IMG_4889.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
By the way...chopping up the scraps was fun for awhile...as I dug through the waste I was reminded of lots of old projects. However, if you're going to make a class set of these, I recommend doing your wrists a favor and chopping over an extended period of time.<br />
<br />
Gather the scraps in a bowl. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2I6JIWebQ0Q/VC9Cex2PedI/AAAAAAAAC70/N4LEkoxDnuY/s1600/IMG_4890.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2I6JIWebQ0Q/VC9Cex2PedI/AAAAAAAAC70/N4LEkoxDnuY/s1600/IMG_4890.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Use your scraps to stuff your pockets. Pack the filling in there pretty good because the kids will take the loft out of them once they get their hands on them. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lOXyk2yIrK8/VC9Cew81bKI/AAAAAAAAC7s/VhXw5PsADs4/s1600/IMG_4892.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lOXyk2yIrK8/VC9Cew81bKI/AAAAAAAAC7s/VhXw5PsADs4/s1600/IMG_4892.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Use clips or pins when you turn the edges under. I just did this by hand. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Oze7R1Vp2CY/VC9CeydF6-I/AAAAAAAAC7o/ofsIgJtxXuM/s1600/IMG_4893.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Oze7R1Vp2CY/VC9CeydF6-I/AAAAAAAAC7o/ofsIgJtxXuM/s1600/IMG_4893.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Once you have a bunch queued up, sew a straight seam close to the edge. Don't forget to backstitch! <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_ckE0kVgFvo/VC9Cf48SinI/AAAAAAAAC8A/jOlI0mjqelg/s1600/IMG_4894.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_ckE0kVgFvo/VC9Cf48SinI/AAAAAAAAC8A/jOlI0mjqelg/s1600/IMG_4894.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Et voila! (As my French-speaking husband would say) Your erasers are complete! <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Please comment or share pictures if you make your own :) <br />

Each summer our guild, the DC Modern Quilt Guild, hosts an annual charity drive gathering up quilts we've made together or individually to donate. Check out more about 100 Quilts for Kids <a href="http://www.quiltsinthequeue.com/p/100-quilts-for-kids.html" target="_blank">here</a>!<br />
<br />
When I joined the guild three years ago, I started this quilt with fabric inherited from my dear grandmother-in-law. It's been sitting, waiting for binding, all that time. (I really hate binding quilts...it's sort of ridiculous.) Well, there was no "I'm new to this school" or "We just bought a new house" excuse this year--so may I present...the finished quilt!<br />

To keep coming back to it even when we've been frustrated by a project or busy with every other task on our to-do lists?<br />
<br />
I don't really have much of an answer, but as I watched a bunch of worn-out, chatty students dive into a DNA origami project that involved coloring nucleotides (one student deemed it "color-by-chemical") I knew it was a universal trait. I've never seen such a happy group of students--these are brilliant ninth graders, their work could pass for senior work most of the time--but, they're kids, and they love to color. Some of them even came to study hall today just to finish (we're supposed to finish in class on Friday. But they get to choose their afternoon activity, and they chose to come color and fold paper--it warms my heart.)<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, I passed the time during their test knitting up the second in a pair of socks. My love of knitting is keeping me sane during test days. I want to keep my eyes on them so that they aren't tempted to let their eyes "wander," but I'm just not cut out to stare students down for four hours a day two days in a row. <br />
<br />
I also dove into yet another project requiring tedious cutting and pasting. I love finding new classroom activities that require massive amounts of prep. This is a DNA sequencing activity, requiring many segments of "code" all cut to different lengths. Tedious yes, but there's really nothing else I'd rather be doing while monitoring a study hall.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-p7rZEiE55ko/UwVm-J3oZBI/AAAAAAAACxc/JE9cK1usmEM/s1600/IMG_3546.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-p7rZEiE55ko/UwVm-J3oZBI/AAAAAAAACxc/JE9cK1usmEM/s1600/IMG_3546.JPG" height="400" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Cutting the strips and gluing or taping them into one continuous sequence.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-L_vvZt1fHXk/UwVm-KEwBeI/AAAAAAAACxg/Z0m1mYEeEPU/s1600/IMG_3551.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-L_vvZt1fHXk/UwVm-KEwBeI/AAAAAAAACxg/Z0m1mYEeEPU/s1600/IMG_3551.JPG" height="400" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Laminated "sequence" ...enough for 6 groups.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
So what is it that makes us love to create? Is it using "dead" time for something productive? Is it knowing you made something beautiful, enchanting, cool or amazing? Does it free our minds from worry? Is it the desire to make something for someone else--to be able to hand over love or care in the form of a tangible object? Is it an exciting endeavor, a workout for your brain? <br />
<br />
It does all of these things for me. What's it do for you?Aubrie Shttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09290773685010641765noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1102628749151719799.post-11943681491094967442014-02-16T12:40:00.000-05:002014-02-16T12:40:03.424-05:00Recipes worth Sharing: Lazy Day Cookies<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3HeLyEiT75U/UwD3oF-zoLI/AAAAAAAACxE/4qruhxskgJ0/s1600/IMG_3527.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3HeLyEiT75U/UwD3oF-zoLI/AAAAAAAACxE/4qruhxskgJ0/s1600/IMG_3527.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
I love my mom's Lazy Day Cookies! I think the "lazy" comes from the fact that you use a cake mix as your only dry ingredient.<br />
<br />
Without further ado...the recipe:<br />
<br />
Ingredients:<br />
German Chocolate cake mix<br />
1/2 c. packed brown sugar (I use 1/2 c. white sugar and 1 1/2 tbsp molasses sometimes)<br />
6 tbsp. shortening or butter, softened<br />
2 eggs<br />
1/4 c. water<br />
<br />
Toppings:<br />
1/2 c. each of: pecan pieces, butterscotch chips, and chocolate chips<br />
<br />
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.<br />
Grease and flour a large jelly roll pan or 9x13" metal pan. (I like the taller sides, sometimes it will rise over the sides of the jelly roll pan).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hRVrIWnWIHk/UwD3n1kEQ0I/AAAAAAAACxA/V5EIB_V-fzE/s1600/IMG_3522.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hRVrIWnWIHk/UwD3n1kEQ0I/AAAAAAAACxA/V5EIB_V-fzE/s1600/IMG_3522.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
Mix the wet ingredients (sugar, butter, eggs, and water) with 1/2 the cake mix and beat well. Add the rest of the cake mix and beat until smooth.<br />
Spread over the cake pan. (This is easiest if you flour your hands and press it out into the pan gently...it's a pretty sticky mix)<br />
Sprinkle with chips and pecans and bake for 20 minutes. Cool in pan.<br />
<br />
Mmmm...the smell is the best part...until you get to taste them :)<br />

When your piece is finished, soak it in cool water. You can also throw in some "no rinse" soap, like Soak. (Soak is also great for washing all kinds of sweaters!)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QdhS1oCQ9iU/UwD26GWKxsI/AAAAAAAACwg/JiQdPEFOu8A/s1600/IMG_3523.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QdhS1oCQ9iU/UwD26GWKxsI/AAAAAAAACwg/JiQdPEFOu8A/s1600/IMG_3523.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Gently squeeze out the piece and roll it in a towel to remove the excess moisture.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vwRhU4xfKdQ/UwD26Rq3ByI/AAAAAAAACwo/IDY6Au1P5tE/s1600/IMG_3524.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vwRhU4xfKdQ/UwD26Rq3ByI/AAAAAAAACwo/IDY6Au1P5tE/s1600/IMG_3524.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zbpKgdu9vss/UwD26f-Zh2I/AAAAAAAACwk/kHIWM2CwS10/s1600/IMG_3525.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zbpKgdu9vss/UwD26f-Zh2I/AAAAAAAACwk/kHIWM2CwS10/s1600/IMG_3525.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
Lay flat to dry. If it's round, try to move it a few times so that you don't dry a crease into it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zsyEdH46lHY/UwD2616mgyI/AAAAAAAACws/fYkXWvYvTRM/s1600/IMG_3526.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zsyEdH46lHY/UwD2616mgyI/AAAAAAAACws/fYkXWvYvTRM/s1600/IMG_3526.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
The difference is sometimes remarkable. Here's a few examples:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-scAya-wrC0E/UwD1jRDhHjI/AAAAAAAACwI/kFh_C6dCwPc/s1600/IMG_3503.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-scAya-wrC0E/UwD1jRDhHjI/AAAAAAAACwI/kFh_C6dCwPc/s1600/IMG_3503.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></td></tr>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">After...nearly as long as the teal cowl.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Lace Ptarmigan cowl before blocking</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-slJZDIXBJfU/UwD1kXMEkTI/AAAAAAAACwY/VM9S9aTqAX4/s1600/IMG_3530.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-slJZDIXBJfU/UwD1kXMEkTI/AAAAAAAACwY/VM9S9aTqAX4/s1600/IMG_3530.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Smooth, open lace after blocking</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
You can use blocking to:<br />
-stretch pieces to a desired length<br />
-open up lacework<br />
-straighten funky edges<br />
-get a better sense of gauge by blocking your swatch (nothing worse than a sweater that doubles in size when you wash it!)Aubrie Shttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09290773685010641765noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1102628749151719799.post-20087676173521293092014-02-08T22:18:00.001-05:002014-02-08T22:18:14.145-05:00Reflection and Peace Quilt<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'll tell you right off the bat that this is a very personal quilt to me, and it is the first finish I've ever kept for myself.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Ever since reading an airline mag article about labyrinths and their meditative purpose, I've been incredibly intrigued by them. The whole notion of turning a quilt into a labyrinth started fall of 2013. An old college roommate is going to seminary here in VA and she and I got to talking about labyrinths. She has a beautiful little cloth that is a hand-held labyrinth, and I thought, "How great would it be to trace your hands across a quilt as you meditate?"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I should pause here and say that while prayer has always been a part of my life, it has never been such a part of healing and peace to me as it has been in the past year. Getting married, moving to VA, and finding a job that really seems "perfect" for me came with more challenges than I expected. Literally crippling stress led to headaches that became so severe (right before I sought help) that I nearly got violently ill in front of students on a field trip that I was supposed to be chaperoning…It was a turning point.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've been making a concerted effort to stay calm and trust that God will take care of more things than I often give Him credit for. That, plus an amazing husband, family, and friends has led me to feel an incredible sense of peace during hectic, stressful situations. I've certainly had moments when stress got the better of me, but they are much less frequent, and much more under my control.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
All of these thoughts and hopes went into the quilt…and they are the reason I included various religious symbols. I hope to continue to find happiness and peace where I used to find stress and frustration. And I hope this quilt serves to remind me to take some time to pause, think, and give thanks for the blessings in my life.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I started the design by drawing out a labyrinth on some graph paper. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6FGvT17D3AQ/UvbZjET2jaI/AAAAAAAACvA/ROsasVM_gXI/s1600/IMG_3166+-+Version+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6FGvT17D3AQ/UvbZjET2jaI/AAAAAAAACvA/ROsasVM_gXI/s1600/IMG_3166+-+Version+2.jpg" height="277" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Since I could only work with two colors, I wanted them to shine. Kaffe Fasset's shot cottons were a no brainer.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QOwe9oQJDck/UvbZiT4yTVI/AAAAAAAACuw/jV7IAP96YuY/s1600/IMG_3161.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QOwe9oQJDck/UvbZiT4yTVI/AAAAAAAACuw/jV7IAP96YuY/s1600/IMG_3161.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then I figured out simple blocks that could be strung together using 2.5 inch wide strips of fabric.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9hieVfSAt-0/UvbZeJYmlRI/AAAAAAAACuQ/11MadLZbe70/s1600/IMG_3346.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9hieVfSAt-0/UvbZeJYmlRI/AAAAAAAACuQ/11MadLZbe70/s1600/IMG_3346.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The blocks were sewn into strips and then quarters.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--F9dvJ0oduU/UvbZiQT_cZI/AAAAAAAACug/KI4RzqYehC4/s1600/IMG_3162.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--F9dvJ0oduU/UvbZiQT_cZI/AAAAAAAACug/KI4RzqYehC4/s1600/IMG_3162.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-paJKtkW8SbY/UvbZjP_GwLI/AAAAAAAACvE/aWd5BhY5Fyk/s1600/IMG_3169.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-paJKtkW8SbY/UvbZjP_GwLI/AAAAAAAACvE/aWd5BhY5Fyk/s1600/IMG_3169.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MZD3J2SYByA/UvbZj-pVvDI/AAAAAAAACvI/LoSu7McDhDc/s1600/IMG_3172.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MZD3J2SYByA/UvbZj-pVvDI/AAAAAAAACvI/LoSu7McDhDc/s1600/IMG_3172.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
And then halves...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XnJTkFIIbXA/UvbZjScMHDI/AAAAAAAACu4/gCR3WHJRLWs/s1600/IMG_3171.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XnJTkFIIbXA/UvbZjScMHDI/AAAAAAAACu4/gCR3WHJRLWs/s1600/IMG_3171.jpg" height="320" width="190" /></a></div>
Until finally a finished top was born!<br />
<br />
I added quilting to both colors. Straight lines along the edges of the dark color and a free motion quilted edge for the light. I made a test swatch for the quilting. (Photo to come soon…with some detailed quilting pictures too!)<br />
<br />
And my favorite part of the quilting…a microstippled "stained glass" medallion in the center :) It's modeled after the <a href="http://arthistoryblogger.blogspot.com/2011/09/chartres-cathedrals-north-rose-window.html" target="_blank">North Rose Window</a> of the Chartres Cathedral in France. I want to walk their labyrinth someday...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JujF2ZGePdw/UvbylEZW0rI/AAAAAAAACvk/Xmy0er3IWvM/s1600/DSC_0157.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JujF2ZGePdw/UvbylEZW0rI/AAAAAAAACvk/Xmy0er3IWvM/s1600/DSC_0157.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The label, complete with the Hail Mary in latin…an homage to my faith.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rVEA78cggl4/UvbW7GZh3NI/AAAAAAAACtI/NvGKTqD06aM/s1600/DSC_0148.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rVEA78cggl4/UvbW7GZh3NI/AAAAAAAACtI/NvGKTqD06aM/s1600/DSC_0148.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />

I spent the Friday and Saturday with these amazing people…</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And may I say that the world needs more people like these folks. Some of them have known each other for years and years and yet they welcomed friends new and old in the same incredibly loving way. God bless them all.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sd6_jxMVQ8I/UvbW9KXWPZI/AAAAAAAACt0/uYcHsaa611o/s1600/DSC_0153.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sd6_jxMVQ8I/UvbW9KXWPZI/AAAAAAAACt0/uYcHsaa611o/s1600/DSC_0153.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
We were out on the Northern Neck of VA. Beautiful…but COLD!<br />
<br />
Fortunately, there was lots of knitting taking place indoors...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OAOIyD1tDtk/UvbW9tAX2SI/AAAAAAAACt4/w0hUZiXsdEI/s1600/DSC_0156.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OAOIyD1tDtk/UvbW9tAX2SI/AAAAAAAACt4/w0hUZiXsdEI/s1600/DSC_0156.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
In the spirit of the Olympics, knitters everywhere pull out their unfinished projects to try to make some progress as we see amazing feats of strength, endurance, and speed on TV.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0SCs1djDKfI/UvbmGz0mBoI/AAAAAAAACvU/hAwjoXHGesY/s1600/DSC_0158.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0SCs1djDKfI/UvbmGz0mBoI/AAAAAAAACvU/hAwjoXHGesY/s1600/DSC_0158.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
I REALLY enjoyed having some knitting buddies!<br />
<br />
I also got to spend some time taking "art" photos of my newest quilt finish. I've never had a finished quilt long enough to take it to a scenic place. (I tend to finish them right before I need to give them away, AND I don't get out to scenic places NEARLY enough…it's a double whammy!)<br />
<br />
This quilt has already traveled with me a bit since I carried it to various social gatherings while I stitched the binding on. <br />
<br />
More info to come about the quilt in a later post…but here are the photos! :)<br />

It has been so nice to spend this week with family. I got to celebrate my Christmas birthday TWICE which is just about unheard of...my birthday normally gets absorbed into the holiday season.<br />
<br />
AND...I've been knitting up a storm! Most of my December was spent working on knitted gifts once I realized that my Dad was in need of a warm scarf. I already had an ambitious project underway for my sister so that meant "much knitting" for me. <br />
<br />
The <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/FurmanKnitter08/leftie" target="_blank">Leftie scarf by Martina Behm</a> was for my sister. I'm surprised how much I enjoyed this project (I'm normally not a fan of garter stitch), but don't attempt it unless you're ready to weave in LOTS of yarn tails!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-b5M2D7EyFak/Ur3P8E_kHkI/AAAAAAAACr0/VP3DNNfyJ9o/s320/IMG_0162.jpg" width="320" /></div>
I wove the tails in as I went. It helped keep me motivated.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-n2fxG5DoEqQ/Ur3P6ouxCLI/AAAAAAAACrs/KOFrLXfTzIk/s1600/IMG_0175.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-n2fxG5DoEqQ/Ur3P6ouxCLI/AAAAAAAACrs/KOFrLXfTzIk/s320/IMG_0175.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-AhYdpUNvNOs/Ur3QA4TT52I/AAAAAAAACsA/1-Mq2LwhMb8/s1600/IMG_0181.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-AhYdpUNvNOs/Ur3QA4TT52I/AAAAAAAACsA/1-Mq2LwhMb8/s320/IMG_0181.JPG" width="320" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Dad got the much more masculine <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/FurmanKnitter08/cinder" target="_blank">Cinder by Jared Flood</a>. This was a total treat to knit...I used Ella Rae superwash chunky and the project flew off the needles (and thank goodness for that!)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GpJbqDXKCXA/Ur3QCcVmoyI/AAAAAAAACsI/XneS-TI5rfs/s1600/IMG_0182.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GpJbqDXKCXA/Ur3QCcVmoyI/AAAAAAAACsI/XneS-TI5rfs/s320/IMG_0182.JPG" width="320" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/FurmanKnitter08/ptarmigan" target="_blank">Ptarmigan Cowl </a>(also by Jared Flood--I am absolutely in LOVE with all his patterns!) has yet to be given away...but it is so lovely that I snagged yarn for three more next year when MissBabs put Sojourn on sale. It's an amazing yarn...cashmere and silk...so soft that no one would dare call it "itchy."</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2LUJ0rV4wCM/Ur3P5wO6MpI/AAAAAAAACro/6rdh2ZvKLOk/s1600/IMG_0156.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2LUJ0rV4wCM/Ur3P5wO6MpI/AAAAAAAACro/6rdh2ZvKLOk/s320/IMG_0156.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
More photos to come of this one with its new owner...I still have three or four hand-knit gifts that need to meet their new owners post-Dec. 25.<br />
<br />
Next up will be quilting...so much sewing and quilting. I'll have to share the haul from my favorite SC fabric store a little later...it's already packed for the trip home. But I picked up some great patterns for knitting needle cases :)<br />
<br />
The last crafty stop of the trip will be <a href="http://quiltingadventures.com/home.aspx" target="_blank">Quilting Adventures</a> in Richmond, VA on the trip home...my plan is to match a few of my new prints with some solid shot cottons for a new circular needle case...yay!<br />
<br />
I'm off to knit some while reading a book...it's my newest crafty trick. eBook plus knitting equals doubly-productive downtime. Happy crafting y'all!<br />

I meant to post this two weeks ago!...</i></span><br />
<br />
It was SUCH a pleasure seeing my friends at the DC MQG meeting yesterday <span style="color: magenta;">(<i>October 19th</i>)</span>. The meeting was nearby, at the Rose Hill Library--so I also got to share some of my favorite spots to eat. I love sharing good food with great people. <a href="http://orangeexplainsitall.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Fredrick</a> and I walked to my favorite Indian restaurant--as soon as I walked in I saw our friend Eric...and he was there because my husband was there too! It was so funny...we must have arrived within ten minutes of each other too.<br />
<br />
In preparation for the meeting, I made a couple of <a href="http://thesillyboodilly.blogspot.com/2009/02/wonky-star-tutorial.html" target="_blank">Wonky Star Blocks following a great tutorial</a> at Silly Boo Dilly. They only took about an hour and were very fun to whip up.<br />

<br />
<a href="http://ifinallyhavetime.com/" target="_blank">Linda</a> was the grand winner at the meeting--winning both the drawing for the blocks and Katie's drawing as well. I'm sure she'll make something beautiful!<br />
<br />
Katie at <a href="http://swimbikequilt.com/" target="_blank">Swim, Bike, Quilt</a> came to share the publishing process with our guild. Huge thanks to her! I'm super excited about the new book Vintage Quilt Revival, especially after getting a sneak peak of some proof pages and quilts :)<br />
<br />
If you have a hobby, I highly recommend finding a group to share that passion. We had the best time yesterday--everyone should have the chance to be inspired by such an amazing group. Thanks DCMQG for a wonderful afternoon!<br />

But our short, local move that started one week before school started and extended three weeks into the start of school was TOUGH! And, totally worth it.<br />
<br />
I spent the week after we closed on our first home painting rooms and installing shelving. Five fully painted rooms later, we started building IKEA wardrobes, then shortly thereafter the furniture was moved in. We did everything except for major furniture ourselves--and in short, my husband is my hero...he did so much of the heavy lifting while I was packing, unpacking, or painting.<br />

<br />
Meanwhile, I started my second year teaching at the Sci and Tech Governor's School where I teach Biology. I may have set myself up with too ambitious a plan for the year--I've decided to "flip" the classroom by creating online lessons that are annotated with voice recordings so that we can do more Q&A, activities, and review in class. Our pace is ridiculous since I basically am teaching AP Bio and Research/Stats to high school freshmen!...and they are awesome...and we all work really, really hard--which generally leads to AMAZING results.<br />
<br />
All that is to say that I haven't really been generating a whole lot of crafty things lately.<br />
<br />
During the first few weeks of school I did try to finish up my "Entropy" sign for my desk. I picked it up one morning before work--and boy, did I show how LONG it had been since I quilted. I needed to add a few inches to the binding, so I cut and ironed one more bias strip and sewed it on--at a 90 degree angle. I didn't even rip the stitches...just cut off the seam and tried again to remember how to attach strips together so that they form a straight line. I should've stopped there.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OXoMArZKpTs/UlvxbZAQ1iI/AAAAAAAACps/RnvpDw6RIBs/s1600/IMG_3044.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OXoMArZKpTs/UlvxbZAQ1iI/AAAAAAAACps/RnvpDw6RIBs/s320/IMG_3044.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I started decorative stitches along the seams to attach the binding and reached the point where the binding needed to be joined. And I <i>joined it twisted!</i><br />
<br />
That was it for me for the day, although I'm happy to report I did finish it later that week. My students love it--nerds that we all are, they love to knock one corner down so that it hangs crooked (entropy is the law that says the world descends into random chaos, after all).<br />
<br />
The whole episode also gave my mom and I something to laugh hysterically at over the phone since I used FaceTime to show her my sad, twisted binding.<br />
<br />
After a few really LONG, hard weeks I've reached some sort of equilibrium. During their first test I knit to my heart's content (I can look up while knitting in the round--allowing both test monitoring and sock/sweater knitting!) I got most of the foot of this sock done and reached a point on what felt like an ENDLESS sweater where I could put the stitches on scrap yarn for the sleeves. I'm almost ready for waist decreases because I can also knit and read technical articles on my Kindle app. Life for me is GOOD when I can both knit and read :)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WcSAE8hcFgw/Ulvxs9V8gGI/AAAAAAAACp0/TRt0qXNRzhM/s1600/IMG_3076.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WcSAE8hcFgw/Ulvxs9V8gGI/AAAAAAAACp0/TRt0qXNRzhM/s320/IMG_3076.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Yesterday was my first "free" day in a long time. So I pulled out the charm packs of Aspen Frost by Moda and started setting up for the Lil Twister tool by sewing squares together. Have you used the Twister tool line? So much shrinkage! But so cute.<br />

The fabric scraps are also quite extensive. Ideas for dealing with bias scraps anyone?<br />

I found a beautiful yarn shop with some beautiful roving. Which led to me digging out my long dormant spindle and spinning some singles.<br />
<br />
I tried plying from a center pull ball and got this...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-x4LqugKIQrY/UgF2HbhkokI/AAAAAAAACnw/dp7sLox38Ic/s1600/IMG_0113.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-x4LqugKIQrY/UgF2HbhkokI/AAAAAAAACnw/dp7sLox38Ic/s1600/IMG_0113.JPG" height="149" width="200" /></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ozYvyakVYV8/UgF2HySo_RI/AAAAAAAACoA/XGPkUILvnYU/s1600/IMG_0114.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ozYvyakVYV8/UgF2HySo_RI/AAAAAAAACoA/XGPkUILvnYU/s1600/IMG_0114.JPG" height="149" width="200" /></a></div>
Then, I tried winding off onto toilet paper (a makeshift bobbin)--and it crushed. So much for even tension.<br />
<br />
Then I tried the knitting needle through a box trick...and got knots. Blah. I almost lost the urge to keep spinning. But after fighting knotting for an hour or so, I did end up with some lovely two ply (and only a mild headache!), so I kept going.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Well, after a nice trip around the web...I ran into some good ideas linked on the <a href="http://homespunlife.wordpress.com/2010/05/23/diy-lazy-kates/" target="_blank">Homespun Life</a> blog. After a few more links I ended up on a Ravelry thread that led me to this <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/98499045@N00/1408094074/" target="_blank">inspiring photo</a>.<br />
<br />
So, I worked up my own plan, knowing I already needed to go to Home Depot for more moving boxes.<br />
<br />
<b>DIY Lazy Kate (and bobbins)</b><br />
<br />
<u>Materials</u>:<br />
3/4"x2" PVC Pipe (I got a 2' piece for $1.34)<br />
1/4" dowel (about $0.75)<br />
4 cabone rings (used for crochet) (~$3)<br />
4 3/8 fender washers ($1)<br />
5/16x3 carriage bolt ($0.32)<br />
5/16 wing nut (you can change the type of bolt and wing nut, as long as they match) ($1.18)<br />
Twine or string<br />
Box with holes in it (try one of those big box stores...mine was from Big Lots)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dv_AkRrvPCE/UgF2FqdddXI/AAAAAAAACm4/SAYJvcyJeW0/s1600/IMG_0103.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dv_AkRrvPCE/UgF2FqdddXI/AAAAAAAACm4/SAYJvcyJeW0/s1600/IMG_0103.jpg" height="320" width="286" /></a></div>
<br />
<u>Tools</u>:<br />
Coping saw (or other handsaw)<br />
Wood glue<br />
Super glue<br />
Emory board<br />
<br />
First, I estimated (guessed) the dowel length...make it longer than the width of your box.<br />
<br />
Then, make the bobbins.<br />
I cut the PVC about 2" shorter than the box width. Sand the edges with an emory board (or a metal file if you're lucky enough to have a well stocked tool box.)<br />
<br />
Use wood glue to attach two cabone rings together. Weight with cans (or clamps).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-w-NxzLwkFhQ/UgF2FvZvOiI/AAAAAAAACm0/_mgw4joSSD0/s1600/IMG_0105.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-w-NxzLwkFhQ/UgF2FvZvOiI/AAAAAAAACm0/_mgw4joSSD0/s1600/IMG_0105.jpg" height="302" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-P-W_OlpZ_ZA/UgF2GGG3gsI/AAAAAAAACnI/RYXSnYAqqp0/s1600/IMG_0107.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-P-W_OlpZ_ZA/UgF2GGG3gsI/AAAAAAAACnI/RYXSnYAqqp0/s1600/IMG_0107.JPG" height="172" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Use super glue to attach the washers to the PVC pipe. Then, more super glue to add the washers to the cabone rings (bigger washers could've been helpful in this step). Weight again.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-opZibUgrdfQ/UgF2Fv_KFUI/AAAAAAAACnA/xMF6ezwbv2Q/s1600/IMG_0106.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-opZibUgrdfQ/UgF2Fv_KFUI/AAAAAAAACnA/xMF6ezwbv2Q/s1600/IMG_0106.jpg" height="320" width="264" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tNJx4XK7Ov4/UgF2GYkADRI/AAAAAAAACnU/PRqUJ9pVvzU/s1600/IMG_0108.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tNJx4XK7Ov4/UgF2GYkADRI/AAAAAAAACnU/PRqUJ9pVvzU/s1600/IMG_0108.jpg" height="320" width="283" /></a></div>
<br />
Now, put it all together! I wound the twine around the cabone rings and estimated where the knot around the bolt should be. Then you can put the bolt through another hole, add the wing nut, and thighten things up until the tension is right for plying.<br />

There it is, my rigged, affordable Lazy Kate.<br />
<br />
I had no idea if this would actually work...but when I'm desperate and highly motivated, things come easier. Big thanks to Mandy for helping steady the pipe while I cut it! And big thanks to Mandy's hubby Tom for calling me the MacGyver of Crafts.<br />
<br />
Now I just need more singles for plying!<br />

<br />
First thing I attacked at the end of last week was the <a href="http://www.incolororder.com/2011/10/lined-drawstring-bag-tutorial.html" target="_blank">Lined Drawstring Bag from InColorOrder.</a> I selected fabrics according to the mosaic.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Lpq1HVm7NAY/UeaM7Swa8kI/AAAAAAAACY0/NgVywOiCZxM/s1600/IMG_2373.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Lpq1HVm7NAY/UeaM7Swa8kI/AAAAAAAACY0/NgVywOiCZxM/s320/IMG_2373.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Came up with a improv-y pattern: <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HFhYAIF4iUM/UeaM7_gJl_I/AAAAAAAACY8/UUROSIJxUD4/s1600/IMG_2375.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HFhYAIF4iUM/UeaM7_gJl_I/AAAAAAAACY8/UUROSIJxUD4/s320/IMG_2375.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VeGAGH0AsVM/UeaM8WXoNQI/AAAAAAAACZM/pCSAxV_QE2E/s1600/IMG_2376.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VeGAGH0AsVM/UeaM8WXoNQI/AAAAAAAACZM/pCSAxV_QE2E/s320/IMG_2376.jpg" width="240" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pcIllQJSov8/UeaM7r5JajI/AAAAAAAACY4/Gcw_71TWFl8/s1600/IMG_2374.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pcIllQJSov8/UeaM7r5JajI/AAAAAAAACY4/Gcw_71TWFl8/s320/IMG_2374.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Wiy2-zpqQD8/UeaM8onP4hI/AAAAAAAACZQ/7cUBy-_XJP0/s1600/IMG_2378.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Wiy2-zpqQD8/UeaM8onP4hI/AAAAAAAACZQ/7cUBy-_XJP0/s320/IMG_2378.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-s0WUJLfIj34/UeaM9LVxXdI/AAAAAAAACZY/4HUVArBwZic/s1600/IMG_2380.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-s0WUJLfIj34/UeaM9LVxXdI/AAAAAAAACZY/4HUVArBwZic/s320/IMG_2380.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-AntDaYrjPEU/UeaM9GIPFuI/AAAAAAAACZg/C_EMUWb1CeA/s1600/IMG_2387.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-AntDaYrjPEU/UeaM9GIPFuI/AAAAAAAACZg/C_EMUWb1CeA/s320/IMG_2387.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Added some FMQ (it was so good to be quilting again!)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uSWXdjRy2mM/UeaM9v4gKeI/AAAAAAAACZs/daE-zBdn_t4/s1600/IMG_2390.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uSWXdjRy2mM/UeaM9v4gKeI/AAAAAAAACZs/daE-zBdn_t4/s320/IMG_2390.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-w0Wbdl84Y3w/UeaM-Ern4aI/AAAAAAAACZ0/h_-2paAgH1Q/s1600/IMG_2460.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-w0Wbdl84Y3w/UeaM-Ern4aI/AAAAAAAACZ0/h_-2paAgH1Q/s320/IMG_2460.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
And then brought the project together. I love it! (And I hope my swap buddy loves it too.) Now I just need to figure out what to enclose. We're doing $10 worth of sewing/quilting notions. What would you want in a quilty treat bag?<br />
<br />
The weekend was a special treat. A dying workshop with <a href="http://stitchindye.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Malka Dubrasky at A Stitch in Dye</a>. She blogged about the amazing workshop space <a href="http://stitchindye.blogspot.com/2013/07/i-went-all-way-to-baltimore-to-answer.html" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />

<br />
I'll just share photos and say...it was AWESOME! And it just gives me another reason to look forward to having a yard once we find a home...I'm totally inviting friends over to dye fabric!<br />
<br />
Speaking of friends...Mandy has been coming over to sew with me. Today I teach her to FMQ! But yesterday we went to The Quilter's Studio at 9600 Main Street (next to FedEx) in Fairfax's Fair City Mall. The shop was amazing! I told my hubby I want to live there.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Qy4quVz56ac/UeaN-NhWAZI/AAAAAAAACbE/_gpmlgroPHc/s1600/IMG_2471.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Qy4quVz56ac/UeaN-NhWAZI/AAAAAAAACbE/_gpmlgroPHc/s320/IMG_2471.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
They helped me take these inherited fabrics:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NjDe_tOvq1E/UeaOKhv7BqI/AAAAAAAACbY/rY2VEYHtTn0/s1600/IMG_2476.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NjDe_tOvq1E/UeaOKhv7BqI/AAAAAAAACbY/rY2VEYHtTn0/s320/IMG_2476.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>

<br />
And pair with these fabrics: (and they did it with such support and
kindness--and showed so much joy as they helped us pick out fabrics)<br />

So now I'm ready to cut pieces for Tula Pink's City Sampler blocks! (slowly chipping away at my list of WIP's from last week)<br />
<br />
My t-shirt quilt is basted...I NEED more room... spray basting a twin size quilt really is no fun. (I bought fusible batting at The Quilter's Studio for my next one.)<br />

City Sampler blocks<br />
Finish binding the silly sign<br />
Finish this top...no name yet...but my mom picked the beautiful batiks<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I finished this quilt top started for charity a few months ago and haven't shared yet.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jgiLv5RUsUk/Ud04WDo3G3I/AAAAAAAACUY/QeJlW0oHC24/s1600/IMG_1805.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jgiLv5RUsUk/Ud04WDo3G3I/AAAAAAAACUY/QeJlW0oHC24/s320/IMG_1805.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
My great finish in the past week was a baby boy quilt for a friend. Last week I worked on the quilting and spent our weekend trip to Ohio sewing on the binding. I plan to work on the label today.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
While Katie was visiting I made her a few quick project bags. A "custom" fit zipper case for her needles from a <a href="http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=176509.0#axzz2Ydd6G150" target="_blank">craftster</a> forum:<br />

And a lined drawstring bag from an <a href="http://www.incolororder.com/2011/10/lined-drawstring-bag-tutorial.html" target="_blank">InColorOrder tutorial</a> as practice for the upcoming DC area modern guild swap.<br />

<br />
I also finally basted the owl quilt using the student tables in my classroom. (Basting is an issue in a tiny apartment...anyone else have this problem? How do you work around it?) I want to get my FMQ skills back up to snuf, then--let the quilting begin!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BMpwnY1LP6U/Ud04YR7Sc4I/AAAAAAAACVU/amshHJNsu18/s1600/IMG_2218.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BMpwnY1LP6U/Ud04YR7Sc4I/AAAAAAAACVU/amshHJNsu18/s320/IMG_2218.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Upcoming projects:<br />
-Baste and quilt my t-shirt quilt.<br />
-Practice FMQ with a silly project for my classroom.<br />
-Use some fabrics I inherited from John's grandmother to make some of Tula Pink's City Sampler blocks.<br />
<br />
Now I'm off for a walk/jog before it starts to rain!<br />

I have no more excuses--school's out and I've actually been spending my "free" time making things again! Now, my problem is that I have so much to share! So, I think I'll hop around the last few months of happenings as the spirit moves me.<br />
<br />
This past Sunday was my dear husband John's birthday. It was a crazy day. We were in Ohio visiting his very sweet grandparents and got an email from our realtor (yep, we're buying our first house!) saying a place just went on the market in the neighborhood we love. We left Ohio earlier than planned, went to the open house, wrote an offer, and then heard today that we unfortunately didn't make the cut (three offers!...the house was on the market for 3 days total). But, we have lots of time left in the summer to shop. We're a bit disappointed, but not crushed.<br />
<br />
So...getting back to crafty things...I always love to mix yarn and fabric trips in with my travels. I squeezed in two shops over our weekend trip to Ohio. The first was <a href="http://www.whiteswanquilt.com/" target="_blank">Traditions at the White Swan</a> in Hagerstown, MD. They have great precuts, awesome samples, and kits (I think there was a kit for every sample in the store!)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WYHC6rRaHxc/UdtJNCjyc4I/AAAAAAAACTo/KwUeVUnH_sw/s1600/IMG_2349.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WYHC6rRaHxc/UdtJNCjyc4I/AAAAAAAACTo/KwUeVUnH_sw/s320/IMG_2349.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Mdi8vBrtRK0/UdtJNFjOUrI/AAAAAAAACT4/7_u8MyyMLgM/s1600/IMG_2348.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Mdi8vBrtRK0/UdtJNFjOUrI/AAAAAAAACT4/7_u8MyyMLgM/s320/IMG_2348.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vWldGhfFviQ/UdtJNTn9_lI/AAAAAAAACTw/lV_DTU9CSaM/s1600/IMG_2350.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vWldGhfFviQ/UdtJNTn9_lI/AAAAAAAACTw/lV_DTU9CSaM/s320/IMG_2350.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Then we were back on the road to Youngstown, OH. On Saturday I had the absolute pleasure of taking Grandma Rene to a new quilt store in the town she loves. She's so proud of Youngstown and talks about their art gallery and symphony constantly! She's even been a part of getting the author of Downton Abbey to come speak at their library. Anyway, she's actually the quilter that got me started on the quilting bug that has not stopped since I slept in her craft room and admired all the handmade quilts on her walls two years ago. She hasn't quilted in a while so it was a treat to see her admire all the new bright fabrics. She's so precious! I wish I had a picture with her! I do have a picture of the fabric.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Yj_tLli6FGo/UdtJOD4uhHI/AAAAAAAACUA/oOk7KNmlkGM/s1600/IMG_2351.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Yj_tLli6FGo/UdtJOD4uhHI/AAAAAAAACUA/oOk7KNmlkGM/s320/IMG_2351.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
Anyway, if you're ever near Canfield, OH you have to check out the <a href="http://www.villagequiltscanfield.com/" target="_blank">Village Quilter</a>. They have a selection of bright and more muted fabrics because two sisters with opposite tastes own the shop together! I've been in a lot of quilt shops, but I really felt at home in this one. I got the feeling people just stopped in to have a conversation with the owners--I would! They have lots of great notions, hand-dyed wool felt and embroidery floss, and many patterns to go along with their fabrics and precuts.<br />
<br />
The highlight of the trip was going into Rene's storage locker. They recently downsized and she had a plastic tub full of quilts that no longer had a home. And the very last quilt at the bottom of the tub was the beautiful quilt that was my original inspiration. It's now at home with us where it will be treasured for the beautiful handiwork that it is.<br />

I'll jump right in.<br />
<br />
1.) Science Olympiad--I've been heading up our school team this year. They've been passed from teacher to teacher and I stepped in with the hope that I'd enjoy it enough to be their sponsor for more than one or two years :)<br />
<br />
Well, the year is nearly over, and I do LOVE this team. If you're not familiar with SO, it's a competition that involves a team of 15 competing in 20+ science and engineering events (Anatomy, Boomilivers, Robot arms, Chem lab, and Experimental design to name a few.)<br />
<br />
Here we are at States with our 1st place trophy!!!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kaMvwu20V6E/UZAJhaMBhyI/AAAAAAAACQw/dqqbb-xLAGI/s1600/IMG_1891.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kaMvwu20V6E/UZAJhaMBhyI/AAAAAAAACQw/dqqbb-xLAGI/s320/IMG_1891.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
They did so well, and I'm so glad I can be there to support them. At dinner, they went around the table and thanked me individually. Apparently the things they appreciate most are my organizational skills, care and concern, and my cookies (I'm not surprised they like the cookies...who doesn't love cookies?)<br />
<br />
Now we're headed to Nationals next weekend. SO exciting and overwhelming! I helped design our t-shirt and am in the progress of working on a banner. Any tips on easy ways to finish off the edges?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3-ghpV4IySg/UZAJt1T9qRI/AAAAAAAACRA/kZYTLJcrVXg/s1600/IMG_1925.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="247" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3-ghpV4IySg/UZAJt1T9qRI/AAAAAAAACRA/kZYTLJcrVXg/s320/IMG_1925.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LYbdapUzDDs/UZAJ6DVGRII/AAAAAAAACRQ/y3bU9yjTZek/s1600/IMG_1930.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LYbdapUzDDs/UZAJ6DVGRII/AAAAAAAACRQ/y3bU9yjTZek/s320/IMG_1930.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
2.) School. The life of a teacher...let's just say that Teacher Appreciation Week falls in May for a reason. We need it. Personally I'm trying to deal with some ethics violations (cheating). It's really unfortunate and very disappointing and is totally NOT my favorite part of the job. Overall, I LOVE this new job and TJ and know that next year will be so much easier. I can't wait to be able to focus on adapting my lessons instead of creating new ones. (Actually, I should be typing up a new "body systems" project right now.)<br />
<br />
3.) There are some fun projects in the works. I'll let the pictures do most of the talking.<br />
<br />
John took me to Needle and Thread in Gettysburg for some shopping therapy just this weekend.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GS54d8Q_-Ik/UZAJz-icV0I/AAAAAAAACRI/uswZkU8avZw/s1600/IMG_1926.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GS54d8Q_-Ik/UZAJz-icV0I/AAAAAAAACRI/uswZkU8avZw/s320/IMG_1926.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
Jumping back in time, we went to my cousin Emily's wedding in Austin, TX. It was SO great to see family and they had the most hilarious photo booth. Steph and the other bridesmaids were beautiful. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GHEW54hbmMs/UZAIoIywz7I/AAAAAAAACPQ/5qBqiirxSd4/s1600/IMG_1706.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GHEW54hbmMs/UZAIoIywz7I/AAAAAAAACPQ/5qBqiirxSd4/s320/IMG_1706.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-l_w6dEprlGc/UZAIuIx9sVI/AAAAAAAACPY/TrEa5cZzMb8/s1600/IMG_1714.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-l_w6dEprlGc/UZAIuIx9sVI/AAAAAAAACPY/TrEa5cZzMb8/s320/IMG_1714.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
Over spring break (in March) we also went to the George Washington Hotel in Winchester. If you can catch a Living Social deal like we did--it's an unbelievable deal! That was the same weekend we went to the quilt museum. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HxvdWws7zSc/UZAI94uneLI/AAAAAAAACP0/i0Ct_PmUsWU/s1600/IMG_1772.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HxvdWws7zSc/UZAI94uneLI/AAAAAAAACP0/i0Ct_PmUsWU/s320/IMG_1772.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5MstK5hA4wA/UZAI9VUzruI/AAAAAAAACPs/_XVzkL1QRbQ/s1600/IMG_1767.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5MstK5hA4wA/UZAI9VUzruI/AAAAAAAACPs/_XVzkL1QRbQ/s320/IMG_1767.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gM7D_gezAEQ/UZAI9PV7L8I/AAAAAAAACPo/TY-MrhbqzQk/s1600/IMG_1762.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gM7D_gezAEQ/UZAI9PV7L8I/AAAAAAAACPo/TY-MrhbqzQk/s320/IMG_1762.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Then Mom came to visit. Here we are on a House tour.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Somewhere between spring break and now we went to Greenwood, SC for a wedding. It was a short weekend trip, but we had a great time! I'm always amazed how many people I still haven't met in this very small town. They all know John and have great stories from his childhood. :)<br />

<br />
I also got to spend an afternoon at the zoo with Cynthia. It was my first time at our National Zoo, and I'll definitely be back. We had a great time. If you haven't, be sure to check out their Amazonia exhibit.<br />

<br />
I have had time to get a few projects underway...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ub4voHDPA6U/UZAJK1nP64I/AAAAAAAACQQ/uMYDxbAhiwc/s1600/IMG_1805.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ub4voHDPA6U/UZAJK1nP64I/AAAAAAAACQQ/uMYDxbAhiwc/s320/IMG_1805.JPG" width="320" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Over spring break I finished the charity top (finally!) and made this "Sweetheart Chic" apron. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hA17VlnL4J0/UZAMYDvC-TI/AAAAAAAACRo/WCnJlrzxiQQ/s1600/IMG_1801.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hA17VlnL4J0/UZAMYDvC-TI/AAAAAAAACRo/WCnJlrzxiQQ/s320/IMG_1801.jpg" width="196" /></a></div>
<br />
Started the cosmos sampler to get some practice at embroidery. I believe I took this picture while I was quarantined in bed with some kind of vicious bronchitis...winter in a room full of sick kids with unfamiliar germs was not kind to me this year.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-49ybHTJoEkU/UZAI0BZFfjI/AAAAAAAACPg/Z006-uAAETw/s1600/IMG_1736.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-49ybHTJoEkU/UZAI0BZFfjI/AAAAAAAACPg/Z006-uAAETw/s320/IMG_1736.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Spent one morning rearranging fabric. Now I'm ready if our guild hosts another scrap swap ;) <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Vh7fXo7SC94/UZAJRfgm6YI/AAAAAAAACQY/dh18iMo4Quc/s1600/IMG_1830.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Vh7fXo7SC94/UZAJRfgm6YI/AAAAAAAACQY/dh18iMo4Quc/s320/IMG_1830.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
And finally started a project with a beautiful jelly roll Mom bought for me in Florida. More of this to come as soon as I can get back at the sewing machine. <br />

For now...I'm going back to fixing fajita bowls (YUMMM) for dinner, studying up on immunology, and grading the statistics part of the kiddos' research papers.Aubrie Shttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09290773685010641765noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1102628749151719799.post-68897691485073823742013-02-05T07:00:00.000-05:002013-02-05T07:00:33.667-05:00A "Getting to Know You" post<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">So...back in November, I was "tagged" by <a href="http://passionquilting.blogspot.ca/2012/11/tag-youre-it-fun-little-blogging-game.html" target="_blank">Christina</a> at Passion Quilting and today I was given a Liebster Award by <a href="http://thecraftyroach.blogspot.com/2013/01/liebster-award.html" target="_blank">Jess</a> at the Crafty Roach. Both are sort of like the "chain letters" of quilt blogging, but they seem much more well-intentioned. Christina's "tag" unfortunately hit me right before my life spiraled into a work vortex...but since I've sort of gotten to a bail-the-water-out-as-the-boat-fills-up equilibrium now, I feel like it's time to join in (and invite others to do the same, if they choose :)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<u><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">The basic premise is the same for each:</span></u><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">1.) Tell 11 things about yourself</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">2.) Answer 11 questions (although I guess I'll be answering 22)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">3.) Ask 11 questions for other bloggers...all with small numbers of followers...and share our personalities along with our love of quilting</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<u><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">So...on to my 11--random--things...</span></u><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">1.) I think my parents are awesome...I never had the teenage falling out that most people have with their parents, and though Mom and Dad are VERY different people, I can totally respect, love, and enjoy both of them. (My sister and I had the whole sibling rivalry thing down to an art--but we're good now, and she's an incredible person too!)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">2.) I am so bad at getting things done that require calling up service people on the phone...and I don't know why!</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">3.) I spent three months studying Ecology, Zoology, and Natural Resource Management in New Mexico with a group of 11 students--our trip involved lots of camping, nearly getting lost among lava rocks while trying to get from a bat cave back to our tent, hanging out with prairie dogs, baby bunnies, setting lots of traps for rodents, lots and lots of camp food, and dissecting a bison--all while living in a ghost town on one of Ted Turner's ranches. It was the most magical trip.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">4.) I think my husband has the patience of a saint.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">5.) My favorite punctuation mark is the dash--I discovered it during a freshman literature class and have never looked back.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">6.) I strive every day to be open-minded and truly listen to people's various opinions, and it frustrates me when people don't just let others be or act closed-minded. But then, I have to accept them as they are because I want to let them be who they are.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">7.) I used to work in a nursery at a Jazzercise--I got free classes and fell in LOVE with group fitness. In college I taught step aerobics and "jazz and sculpt." Now, my love is Zumba.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">8.) I love watching my students take tests--you can really see all their little personalities come out as they try to figure out the answer.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">9.) I've been completely obsessed with orchids since a trip to an orchid breeder in Newberry, SC. Chloe, my old kitty, figured this out and would EAT my orchids when I went on long trips (I believe this was out of feline spite.)</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">10.) I met my husband while singing in chorus together--it's really a very cute story--and when our choral director was tearing up as I walked down the aisle during our wedding six years later, I burst into tears.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">11.) I'm a total foodie. I love farmers markets, farm fresh eggs, tomatoes of every color and shape, cooking, baking, making my own jams and pickles--I would probably have a garden at some point in my life, but I have an IRRATIONAL fear of insects.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">The 11 questions from Christina:</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="line-height: 17.954545974731445px;">1.) What is your most favorite quilt you have ever done?</span></span><br /><i><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="line-height: 17.954545974731445px;">I

<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="line-height: 17.954545974731445px;">2.) I love doodling on fabric! </i></span></span><br /><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="line-height: 17.954545974731445px;">3.) Applique. Yay or Nay?</span></span><br /><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="line-height: 17.954545974731445px;"><i>Yay, but on rare occasions in small doses. </i></span></span><br /><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="line-height: 17.954545974731445px;">4.) Which piece of fabric that you have or have ever owned would you do almost anything to have more of?</span></span></span><br />
<i><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Oh my, I'm still in my stash building phase. I really like the grey and plum fabric with leaves in the quilt top here.</span></i><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="line-height: 17.954545974731445px;">5.) If you could teach one thing to someone about quilting what would it be?</span></span></span><br />
<i><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Free motion quilting...I'm a woman of few interests ;)</span></i><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="line-height: 17.954545974731445px;">6.) What do you listen to when you are quilting? Favorite book? Favorite Music? Television program or Movie?</span></span></span><br />
<i><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Lots of NPR (I love "Wait, wait, don't tell me"). I also love books on tape or something like Gilmore Girls or Big Bang theory. Almost never music.</span></i><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="line-height: 17.954545974731445px;">7.) Are you a Spring, Summer, Autumn or Winter color scheme lover?</span></span></span><br />
<i><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Spring and fall</span></i><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="line-height: 17.954545974731445px;">8.) What is your favorite book and/or author?</span></span></span><br />
<i><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">I love Barbara Kingsolver. And Jane Eyre.</span></i><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="line-height: 17.954545974731445px;">10.) If there is one project that you have admired but never had the courage to attempt, what is it?</span></span></span><br />
<i><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="line-height: 17.954545974731445px;">The art quilts that look like impressionistic paintings. I really want to do one of Reedy River Park...a quaint little park with a beautiful new, modern bridge in Greenville, SC. </span></span></span></i><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="line-height: 17.954545974731445px;">11.)Where is your favorite place to be?</span></span></span><br />

<br />
Tuesday I started <a href="http://store.pinksandbeachdesigns.com/120-barbados.html" target="_blank">this</a>:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PkZQwIv8wqw/UQHZTvISiEI/AAAAAAAACAA/YK9Z1uNZ-eI/s1600/IMG_1619.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PkZQwIv8wqw/UQHZTvISiEI/AAAAAAAACAA/YK9Z1uNZ-eI/s320/IMG_1619.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
And now, I have this:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--BwFrmGwJg4/UQHXo3OWo-I/AAAAAAAAB-c/iClRlcRiYto/s1600/IMG_1623.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--BwFrmGwJg4/UQHXo3OWo-I/AAAAAAAAB-c/iClRlcRiYto/s320/IMG_1623.jpg" width="240" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Pockets!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-w5552vSaVZs/UQHXpuXvY2I/AAAAAAAAB-w/T7bT466r4Wc/s1600/IMG_1624.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-w5552vSaVZs/UQHXpuXvY2I/AAAAAAAAB-w/T7bT466r4Wc/s320/IMG_1624.jpg" width="240" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The pieces--ready to be joined.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I was happy to see this mangled mess disappear.</td></tr>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Inner pockets</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I finished it last night and was able to wear it to work today. So fun to be finishing things!<br />

(And hopefully many more in the next few weeks.)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IfLoZDAimNk/UP_T0F087rI/AAAAAAAAB9A/YGXP4OJVx9g/s1600/IMG_1607.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IfLoZDAimNk/UP_T0F087rI/AAAAAAAAB9A/YGXP4OJVx9g/s320/IMG_1607.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
This is my finished <a href="http://store.atkinsondesigns.com/stores_app/Browse_Item_Details_ws.asp?Shopper_id=989122044198&Store_id=913&page_id=23&Item_ID=1035" target="_blank">Pockets-to-go</a> tote that DC Modern worked on as a guild project last Saturday. I don't have a free arm on my machine, so I bound the top by hand with visible stitches.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Fnm4JEpH5XY/UP_Tzsx2FXI/AAAAAAAAB8w/ouoRtNIQFk4/s1600/IMG_1603.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Fnm4JEpH5XY/UP_Tzsx2FXI/AAAAAAAAB8w/ouoRtNIQFk4/s320/IMG_1603.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rMh6YyUKfEc/UP_TziJoSNI/AAAAAAAAB80/hGE3_DNNQlc/s1600/IMG_1605.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rMh6YyUKfEc/UP_TziJoSNI/AAAAAAAAB80/hGE3_DNNQlc/s320/IMG_1605.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
So much easier (and no wanting to hurl my machine against a wall :)<br />
<br />
I also got all the pieces together on my Hooterville quilt. See more pictures <a href="http://teachnknit.blogspot.com/2013/01/ufo-is-back-in-progress.html" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FOJdaJSh-ws/UP_TzZeP-VI/AAAAAAAAB8s/0P8lGlId1Rw/s1600/IMG_1602.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FOJdaJSh-ws/UP_TzZeP-VI/AAAAAAAAB8s/0P8lGlId1Rw/s320/IMG_1602.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
It needs a border, then I can begin a much anticipated quilting process (this quilt was one of the first I EVER started, but I didn't move forward because the notion of quilting it scared me. Not scared anymore thanks to <a href="http://www.freemotionquilting.blogspot.com/p/free-motion-quilt-along.html" target="_blank">Leah Day's Quilt along</a> and lots of practice on the charity quilt. Not to mention the great support I've been getting from the lovely people that read and support me on this blog.)<br />
<br />
My new start for the week was an impulse buy on MLK day. I need a new purse and cannot find one...but I love this Barbados bag. I have the front panel put together.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DtFPDnHWfJ8/UP_T01R_uSI/AAAAAAAAB9M/NWDlt19uvdQ/s1600/IMG_1619.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DtFPDnHWfJ8/UP_T01R_uSI/AAAAAAAAB9M/NWDlt19uvdQ/s320/IMG_1619.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-X0CYu_9NSao/UP_T0_ZiM2I/AAAAAAAAB9Y/GQowKYjlDPQ/s1600/IMG_1622.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-X0CYu_9NSao/UP_T0_ZiM2I/AAAAAAAAB9Y/GQowKYjlDPQ/s320/IMG_1622.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
So many GREAT pockets!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PQ21K4AsV6A/UP_T0_6BIjI/AAAAAAAAB9Q/iB_aL7ukB5g/s1600/IMG_1623.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PQ21K4AsV6A/UP_T0_6BIjI/AAAAAAAAB9Q/iB_aL7ukB5g/s320/IMG_1623.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
That's my current list for now, but lots of things are waiting for my new-found initiative to work on them too!<br />
<br />
Happy quilting! And make sure to check out other great projects at <a href="http://www.freshlypieced.com/" target="_blank">WIP Wednesday</a>!Aubrie Shttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09290773685010641765noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1102628749151719799.post-1931823580222738822013-01-20T21:43:00.000-05:002013-01-20T21:43:04.981-05:00UFO is back in progress!I love <a href="http://www.dcmodernquiltguild.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">DC Modern Guild</a> meetings...they really keep the momentum going. And this week, my skills were stretched yet again with group project led by <a href="http://ifinallyhavetime.com/" target="_blank">Linda</a> and her friend Anne. We were working on Pockets to Go Caddies!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Xw2DiEyqNQw/UPymwQZ87QI/AAAAAAAAB6c/xOuKSb1sY3w/s1600/IMG_1599.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Xw2DiEyqNQw/UPymwQZ87QI/AAAAAAAAB6c/xOuKSb1sY3w/s320/IMG_1599.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Nifty zippered pocket with lining :)</td></tr>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The interior pockets!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Mine is almost finished...It needs a little more hand binding and the top binding/handles. Trying to sew the binding on the sides nearly made me throw the thing against the wall--but both Linda and new friend Sarah talked me off the ledge of insanity/frustration. <br />
<br />
I really cannot say enough great things about this guild. It's full of wonderful, enthusiastic, supportive people that have become a delight to see each month. We had so many new attendees at this meeting that people had to sit on the floor! I will definitely bring my portable table to the next meeting.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NVBcjueTVGM/UPymp7ELOFI/AAAAAAAAB50/SyGyOUDyWIU/s1600/IMG_1590.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NVBcjueTVGM/UPymp7ELOFI/AAAAAAAAB50/SyGyOUDyWIU/s320/IMG_1590.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
Today, with the charity project handed off to the guild (Linda again...she's amazing!), I got to pick the Hooterville quilt up again. The pieces are FINALLY together! <br /><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uS3Gw2PU3vU/UPyolgwBWII/AAAAAAAAB70/8bA1rVdm7bc/s1600/IMG_1602.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uS3Gw2PU3vU/UPyolgwBWII/AAAAAAAAB70/8bA1rVdm7bc/s320/IMG_1602.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Now...my first attempt at quarter triangles was a bit rough, but it's so colorful and fun that I don't care...and I'm leaving it as a record of where I started in my quilting journey--this was the first pattern I decided to tackle, and I didn't know yet to <u>starch</u> the fabric first. (Always starch first to make your life easier.)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZpLRroyPE-k/UPymu0wYXaI/AAAAAAAAB58/1Wnoyzmq8BM/s1600/IMG_1595.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZpLRroyPE-k/UPymu0wYXaI/AAAAAAAAB58/1Wnoyzmq8BM/s320/IMG_1595.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
A few corners did meet up a little nicer. I'm so happy to see it together, hopefully I'll add borders tomorrow and get back to machine quilting soon.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Sef74BYFCB4/UPymuyL2cXI/AAAAAAAAB6E/Yr9ap3XHe8A/s1600/IMG_1596.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Sef74BYFCB4/UPymuyL2cXI/AAAAAAAAB6E/Yr9ap3XHe8A/s320/IMG_1596.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Well, I should get back to my hand sewing while I still have some movie left to watch with my hubby!<br />
<br />
I'm linking up with <a href="http://freemotionquilting.blogspot.com/2013/01/ufo-sunday-unwind-and-restart.html" target="_blank">UFO Sunday at The Free Motion Quilting Project</a>. It's a great place to see a variety of projects young and old. This week (and the past few) have been chock full of deadlines and appointments...but they were all accomplished and most things ran smoothly. I even managed to sneak in a cellular respiration pictionary game that I'll need to blog about later :)<br />
<br />
I have to send a great big thanks again to <a href="http://dcmodernquiltguild.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">DCModern</a> (especially <a href="http://elle-mental.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Elle</a>, <a href="http://quiltsinthequeue.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Heather</a>, and <a href="http://jessiealler.com/" target="_blank">Jessie</a>) for putting this amazing top and back together!<br />
<br />
But most of the thanks here goes to <a href="http://freemotionquilting.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Leah Day</a>. I've been reading her blog since I started thinking about free motion quilting...listening to her talk (well, reading) about how to minimize drag on the quilt, how to move the quilt in order to minimize puckering, how to get over those first few months where you feel like nothing looks right (NO ripping!), what stitches work in what areas, how to move the patterns around to work in a space--I could go on and on! Generally, I picked up a love of quilting that is not going ANYWHERE! All of the following designs are patterns I've picked up along the way...the next two pictures show <a href="http://freemotionquilting.blogspot.com/p/free-motion-quilt-along.html" target="_blank">Leah's Flowing Lines, Paisley, and Quilt Busting Matrix</a>. Others are from Quilting Modern and Free Motion Quilting with Angela Walters. You should go check out <a href="http://freemotionquilting.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">FMQ Friday</a>...there's some amazing quilters out there learning and sharing along with Leah and the blog community.<br />

I've learned that even very bright students need to have skills modeled to them and then have time to practice those skills in a useful context. Actually, my teaching philosophy lately has been all about skills--what can I teach them as people, as learners, WHILE they learn biology. I've also been trying to have a good attitude through an insane amount of responsibilities (I'll spare you the details...but I love my job, and I don't mind giving 150%, and I was still pushed to tears and delirium in the past 48 hours). However, I've come out on the other side (for a brief gasp of air) and people seem to be responding to the good attitude...who knows, maybe it will even catch on! My hope for 2013 is to continue to keep growing--as a wife, a teacher, a friend, a knitter, a quilter...<br />
<br />
And on that note...on to the quilting!<br />
<br />
Still working on the charity quilt for <a href="http://www.quiltcon.com/" target="_blank">QuiltCon</a> with <a href="http://www.dcmodernquiltguild.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">DC Modern</a>. Here's some of my favorite shots:<br />

<br />
Here's my plan for the rest of the quilting:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yC6h9nWhpSA/UOzaiFc4xcI/AAAAAAAAB1Q/HwPSVtLh8QM/s1600/IMG_1554.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yC6h9nWhpSA/UOzaiFc4xcI/AAAAAAAAB1Q/HwPSVtLh8QM/s1600/IMG_1554.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
Of course, with limited free time these days, there's no other projects currently in progress. But I'm itching to finish:<br />
-The Owl Quilt (Hooterville) for UFO Sunday<br />
-The pink floral quilt just needs a border for a finished top<br />
-My t-shirt quilt needs two sashings and borders for a finished top<br />
-One charity quilt is waiting for binding<br />
-One charity quilt is in pieces...might be a while for this one<br />
<br />
And I really want to start working with these beauties:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vLeA4_57OrU/UOzagfWJU3I/AAAAAAAAB04/3hCrhtG74WM/s1600/IMG_1541.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vLeA4_57OrU/UOzagfWJU3I/AAAAAAAAB04/3hCrhtG74WM/s1600/IMG_1541.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7QkIGnHIj_k/UOzag1yS8QI/AAAAAAAAB1A/aJmRNMVe4UU/s1600/IMG_1543.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7QkIGnHIj_k/UOzag1yS8QI/AAAAAAAAB1A/aJmRNMVe4UU/s1600/IMG_1543.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I have a special plan in store for them...my first design!<br />
<br />
What's your current personal or quilting WIP goal? How do you want to grow in the new year?<br />

So great to see Mom and Dad...and it will be even better to see Steph too at Christmas.<br />
<br />
Mom and I discovered two great shops: Haus of Yarn (beautifully organized, great service, very knowledgeable) and Stitcher's Garden (an incredibly diverse shop...totally organized, but so full of fabric it can seem overwhelming...go with a plan and ask or wander for hours...either would work well here.)<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kO_J5UpG9NI/UKMM1mxn5II/AAAAAAAABuI/nx0w7pobikY/s1600/IMG_1288.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kO_J5UpG9NI/UKMM1mxn5II/AAAAAAAABuI/nx0w7pobikY/s320/IMG_1288.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Yarn for a new sweater.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
During the moments I could snatch tonight and last night I did a few more practice squares of FMQ. Among the many great things at Stitcher's Garden, I found <a href="http://freemotionquiltingwithangelawalters.com/" target="_blank">Angela Walter's FMQ book</a>. So a few squares are inspired by her book and some are <a href="http://freemotionquilting.blogspot.com/p/free-motion-quilt-along.html" target="_blank">Leah Day's Free Motion Quilt Along</a>.<br />

I love the purple and the paisley...of course I like most patterns involving paisley and love the color purple. So I'm probably biased.<br />
